Operating under extreme stress, demanding time constraints, and meeting overwhelming expectations will inevitably feel impossible. However, one must acknowledge that poor mental health consequently results in failure, not just poor quality of life.
The good news is that through moderation, managing student life and mental health is doable. It is a demanding but rewarding juggling act, especially for those who study computer science and spend most days sedentary and isolated. Ultimately, effective time management is paramount for success.
This begs the question, how can one create a realistic schedule that accommodates classes, study sessions, and a healthy overall well being.
The true answer to being successful in managing both aspects is taking a holistic approach–making health conscious decisions, practicing mindfulness, and so on.
However, I’d like to make a point that my experiences in boxing alone have been conducive to academic success in addition to much improved mental health and quality of life.
For lack of better words, boxing has forced me to better manage both.
Boxing provides routine and structure. Boxing is a mechanism of releasing endorphins (which doesn’t just mean feeling happier, but also results in enhanced cognitive function). It is a systemic stress reducer, improves quality of sleep, and enables social interaction which results in the gym serving as another support group.
Prioritizing tasks, allocating dedicated time for each, minimizing stress by avoiding last-minute rushes is crucial. Cultivating a support system, both academically and emotionally, engaging with classmates, teammates, coaches, training partners, and counselors can provide guidance and encouragement which is equally as important.
However, for me personally, boxing has even promoted mindfulness with time management, academics, and mental health, because the truth is, it certainly makes an individual more grounded.
Mental health should be a top priority; integrate self-care practices into your routine, such as adequate sleep and relaxation techniques. But also have the ability to recognize when stressors become overwhelming and seek professional help if needed.
In summary, boxing, or for lack of better words, getting punched in the mouth, has made me a more mindful individual. It has helped me understand that peak performance requires physical well being, moderating, and effective time management in order to find success when tasked with seemingly impossible challenges.
